Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University has again offered scholarships to its students through the programs launched by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Having inaugurated a colorful event at the Punjab University involving Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the new ‘Honhaar Scholarship Scheme‘ was revealed to the masses, including the modalities for interest-free student loans and the rebirth of the ever-famed laptop distribution scheme.
Scholarships granted based on Talent and Inclusion
The “Honhaar Scholarship Scheme” has already responded with a great response, with as many as 70,000 applicants. Of these, 30,000 scholarships will be granted and financed by 18,000 male students and 12,000 female students. This year, students from 15 private universities across Pakistan will also be able to apply, a big step toward equality. This also means that position holders of matric and intermediate would benefit from this program, so merit and Talent should be the principal assessment criteria.
While speaking at the event, CM Maryam said, “Talented students are my students; this is our responsibility. Education investment in the next generation is what a real politician does. To the attendees, she said that scholarships will only be awarded on merit regardless of the political leaning of the applicants.
Students on to Path of Entrepreneurs
Besides scholarships, CM Maryam provided an interest-free student loan plan during her speech and continued the speech as follows. These loans, directed at exercising the beginning of businesses by students, are meant to lessen the financial calamities of families and foster self-reliance. The Chief Minister highlighted that repayment will be smooth and hassle-free so students can concentrate on creating a better future.
Laptop Scheme Relaunch in January
CM Maryam further disclosed that it was indeed a New Year’s resolution; the laptop distribution program has been rebooted since January. This will help this initiative; students will be provided with technological assets that would enhance their academic and career standing.
Education in Nation Building
Speaking to the audience, CM Maryam highlighted the importance of education in creating a better future for the country ‘Pakistan.’ She affirmed that students’ lives are in classrooms and universities, not on the streets with stones and sticks. As she said, Pakistan is its educated youth and not in weapons and protests. Her words are about peace and development, focusing students on constructive activities rather than indulging in disturbances.
Merit-Based Governance and Transparency
The Chief Minister also emphasized her government policy on merit in appointing civil servants in Punjab. She compared this position with previous governments by asking why previous governments did not use public funds to finance education. ‘If they had invested in education, millions of children would be educated today,’ she said, adding her administration’s commitment to students’ future.
An Event at Punjab University
Punjab University event had great and moving performances, such as a recitation from the Holy Quran national anthem and a poem by Allama Iqbal by the GC University musical society. The beneficiaries of the scholarships were provided a guard of honor by a police contingent to create a sense of pride.
Secy Higher Education Dr. Farukh Naveed also shared information regarding the scholar’s program, which he also found appreciable as it was not discriminative against anyone. He mentioned that this course guarantees deserving students’ chances regardless of their institution type, including private colleges.
